既然無法成為榮總的正式員工，李雅郁乾脆回學校去當助教，雖然是一年一聘，待遇卻比在榮總還高一點。本想安心下來工作，沒想到，教育部突然指示未來要用研究助理的經費來取代助教，她的工作又不保。
頂著高學歷的她，眼看就要失業沒頭路，非常湊巧，她的大學同學提供訊息，可以去參加警察特考，福利相當好。「他是大學畢業之後去插考警大，又讀了二年，變成警察。我則是參加九十五年的二等特考。」
這次特考是警政署為了吸收高科技人才，特別舉辦的考試，規定至少要碩士以上學歷才能報考。「我是考生物組，二百多人報名，只錄取六個人。後來放榜我才知道，錄取的六個人當中，有二個還是博士咧。」

考上之後，李雅郁在警大受訓十一個月，「除了專業技能之外，免不了要體能訓練，包括柔道、綜合逮捕術、手槍射擊，也是很辛苦。去年一月分發到刑事局，又有半年的試用期，現在我已經是真正的警察，薦任七職等，巡官任用，月薪比以前當助教要多好幾萬元。」

「我想有了證照之後，比較有實力可以換工作，後來，我還真的去銀行和證券公司擔任櫃檯營業員。」不過，黃雅萍也說，儘管有證照在身，薪水並不高，一個月還不到三萬元。
考選部第一次開放大學生報考警察特考，黃雅萍跟著好朋友去聽說明會，覺得警察的工作還不錯，想說碰碰運氣去考考看，結果真的讓她考上了。「我覺得當警察很不錯，剛做滿一年，現在的待遇差不多是以前的二倍。」


開放女性錄取


今年警察特考人數，比去年多了五千多人，其中包括七個博士、六百一十三個碩士。原因無他，經濟不景氣，一般碩士畢業生的薪水都還不到三萬元；但考上警察之後，即使是高中畢業，月薪都有五、六萬元，引起搶當警察的熱潮。
現在要當警察，除了考警大和警專之外，還可以參加基特班和年特班的考試。基特班是高中職以上學歷、二十八歲以下就可報考；年特班則是開放大專以上學歷，年齡拉高到三十七歲以下。
台灣警察專科學校教育長洪春木表示，正期生和基特班都有性別限制，女性只錄取百分之十，年特班則沒有限制，但基於兩性平權，到了民國九十九年，也將全面開放，不再限制女性錄取比例。
不過，由於女性考試一向比男性來得優秀，很多警界高層擔心，將來的女警人數可能會高過男警。事實上，九十六年年特班考試，男性錄取一百八十九人，女性則是錄取一百九十二人，女性已經比男性還多三人。
一位高階警官表示，高考一級及格的公務員，規定是博士才能報考，基本起薪只有五萬四千多元；警察三等特考，大學生就可以考了，考試及格，底薪加上超勤最高津貼，超過七萬元。「薪水這麼高，大家當然搶著來當警察囉。」
